Together, we have embarked on a journey to appreciate this cultural feast that transcends the boundaries of time and space.

It stands as an oriental gem in the history of world ceramics, brimming with artistic charm and cultural depth. Originating in the Yuan Dynasty, Fahua inherited the grandeur and splendor of Tang and Song Tri-colored glazed pottery, showcasing magnificent and resplendent glazes. Throughout history, Fahua ceramics and their firing techniques flourished during the Ming Dynasty but gradually declined due to the complexity of the techniques and shifting aesthetic preferences, By the reign of Emperor Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty, Fahua production had basically ceased. 如今,在于山等艺术家和匠师的努力下,古老的珐华技艺重获新生,再次焕发出夺目的光彩。珐华技艺复兴成果首次在国际平台的发布,是“朝元窑”珐华亮相2019太湖世界文化论坛“传承与创新——珐华技艺复兴成果发布”仪式,发布成果在意大利前总理罗马诺·普罗迪、日本前首相鸠山由纪夫、联合国教科文组织前总干事博科娃等嘉宾的共同见证下揭幕。 Today, thanks to the relentless efforts of artists and craftsmen like Yu Shan, the ancient Fahua technique has been reborn, radiating with renewed brilliance. The debut of the Fahua revival achievements on the international stage took place at the "Inheritance and Innovation – Fahua Technique Revival Achievement Release" ceremony at the Taihu World Cultural Forum in 2019. This historic moment was witnessed by esteemed guests including former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi, former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, and former UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, among others. 
此后,珐华器作为国礼、频频参与中国文化外交、出现于重大活动场合并获得广泛赞誉。2024年11-12月,于山携“朝元窑”珐华艺术品参加巴黎名媛舞会、太湖世界文化论坛巴黎圆桌会议等活动,是珐华技艺复兴成果的首次海外展出。这标志着珐华技艺在国际舞台上得到了更广泛的关注与认可,进一步推动了珐华技艺的传承与发展。 Fahua ceramics, since then, have been presented as national gifts frequently in major events of China's cultural diplomacy, garnering widespread acclaim. From November to December 2024, Yu Shan brought Zhao Yuan Yao Fahua artworks to the international forefront with exhibitions at the Le Bal des Débutantes in Paris and the Taihu World Cultural Forum Paris Roundtable. This represents the first overseas showcase of the revived Fahua technique, signifying its growing international profile and broader recognition on the global stage. Therefore, when Zhao Yuan Yao artworks were once again presented to people in France and beyond, they were greeted with familiarity and joy, rather than strangeness. This underscores a universal aspiration for beauty that transcends national borders and cultural differences. Yu Shan aspires to create more Fahua works in the future, contributing to telling China's stories with this ancient craftsmanship. 朝元窑:于山与珐华技艺的传承: Zhao Yuan Yao: Yu Shan and the Inheritance of Fahua Craftsmanship 于山毕业于中央工艺美术学院(现清华美院),作为一名从事设计行业的北京人,他因热爱文化而关注山西,因收藏而接触珐华,并被其独特的美感所吸引,从此踏上了探寻和复兴珐华技艺的道路。 Yu Shan, a Beijing native and a seasoned designer whograduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Design (now Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design), embarked on an extraordinary journey of exploring and reviving Fahua technique. His passion for culture led him to set sights on Shanxi, and through his collecting endeavors, he encountered Fahua—a craftsmanship that captivated him with its distinctive beauty. 自2010年起,以于山为代表的艺术家和匠师们以珐华的复兴为己任,在探索的道路上不断尝试并逐渐掌握了珐华技艺的精髓。为了实现珐华华美的釉色,甚至仅一轮实验过程就能让200㎡的厂房被数十万只如火柴盒大小的试釉瓷片铺满。 Since 2010, artists and craftsmen, with Yu Shan as a prominent figure, have taken it as their mission to revive Fahua art. Their journey has been one of relentless exploration and experimentation, gradually mastering the essence of Fahua craftsmanship. To achieve the resplendent glazes of Fahua, in just one round of experimentation, the 200-square-meter workshop transforms into a dazzling display of hundreds of thousands of tiny test tiles, each the size of a matchbox. 为了将这门技艺更好地传承下去,于山多年间往返北京山西数百次,并于2016年创建了“朝元窑”品牌。朝元窑位于山西高平,这里历史文化底蕴深厚,是珐华技艺的原生地之一。朝元窑的建立,为传承和发扬珐华技艺提供了坚实的后盾。2017年,“朝元窑”成功烧制出珐华器。于山表示,当你看到作品时,你不会感受到创烧它的艰难,只会感受到珐华应有的那种繁盛和美感。希望“朝元窑”烧制出能够代表中国文化的陶瓷艺术品,也期待更多人参与到珐华技艺的传承和创新中。 To ensure that this ancient craftsmanshipis passed down for generations to come, Yu Shan made countless trips between Beijing and Shanxi over the years, and founded "Zhao Yuan Yao" in 2016. Zhao Yuan Yao is nestled in Gaoping, Shanxi – a region steeped in history and culture, and one of the birthplaces of Fahua porcelain. Its establishement provides a solid foundation for preserving and promoting this art form. In 2017, Zhao Yuan Yao successfully produced its Fahua procelains. Yu Shan shared, "When you see the works, you won't feel the hardships behind their creation; you'll only sense Fahua's prosperity and beauty, as it should be. Our aspiration at Zhao Yuan Yao is to produce ceramic artworks that embody the essence of Chinese culture. We also expect more people to join us in the preservation and innovation of Fahua craftsmanship.”
匠心感悟:传承文化,促进交流 Craftsmanship Insights: Preserving Culture, Fostering Exchange 于山强调,在传承珐华技艺的过程中,区别于民间珐华工艺品烧造,“朝元窑”珐华是首次由艺术家创作并指导的当代珐华艺术品的实践创新。这种创新不仅保留了珐华技艺的传统精髓,更融入了现代艺术元素和审美观念,使得珐华艺术品焕发出新的生机和活力。 Yu Shan emphasized, in the pursuit of preserving Fahua craftsmanship, what sets Zhao Yuan Yao Fahua porcelains apart from traditional Fahua folk crafts, is that Zhao Yuan Yao Fahua artworks represent a pioneering practice where artists create and guide the production of contemporary Fahua artworks.This innovative practice not only retains the traditional essence of Fahua craftsmanship but also integrates modern artistic elements and aesthetic perspectives, breathing new life and vitality into Fahua artworks. 大量的摸索和尝试,不仅让他们触碰到了很多遗失的密码和技艺,更为拓展其他门类的研究提供了有益的借鉴。例如,在解决珐华低温釉彩难以烧造金色的问题时,团队采用了贴金方式。这一做法竟与近期南海“一号沉船”考古中首次发现的珐华瓷器主体纹饰贴上的黄金金箔工艺不谋而合。 After countless trials and explorations, the team has not only stumbled upon many forgotten techniques and secrets but has also paved the way for research in other fields. One such instance is the innovative solution to the challenging task of firing gold on Fahua's low-temperature enamel: the team devised a method—gold foil attachment. Amazingly, this method aligns with a first-ever discovered gold foil technique on Fahua porcelain from the archaeological findings of the "Wreck No. 1 in the South China Sea". “这意味着我们在研究和恢复的过程中,可能与古人有了相通的地方。这也和我们十几年来的积累有关,当时直觉就觉得应该这样做。后来看到新闻的那一刻,觉得仿佛跟古人有对话了。”于山说。 "This means we may have tapped into something that resonates with the ancients in our research and restoration process," Yu Shan remarked. "This connection is deeply rooted in our decades-long accumulation of knowledge and intuition, which told us this was the right path to follow.
